In this week’s episode, we discuss the only two essential lenses for landscape photography. One of the most common questions I hear has to do with which lenses and focal lengths are best for landscape photography and depending on who you ask you’ll probably receive a slightly different answer. It really depends on an individual photographers personal style and what they enjoy photographing the most, but generally speaking the more common focal lengths for landscape photography are the 10-24mm, 16-35mm, 24-70mm, perhaps even the 24-105mm and the 70-200mm.
And in this video, I want to share with you the only two lenses I have remaining after selling almost all of my camera gear over the last two years, why I decided to keep these two specific lenses, why I sold the rest, and why I now regret this decision. So over the past two years I’ve made a concerted effort to reduce the amount of camera gear I own for my landscape photography in an effort to streamline my workflow and my camera lenses would be the area that would benefit the most form this reduction.
Of the two remaining lenses I currently use for my landscape photography, one will probably not come as a big surprise for many landscape and outdoor photographers, but the other is a bit less common. However, the reason I decided to keep these two specific focal length combinations is perhaps what’s most important.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below – I guarantee I’ll get back to ya.

do you remember what month you were in Superstition Hills?
Great video, I liked and subscribed. The content affirmed my decision to carry primarily a 19 to 55 zoom. Thanks.
I prefer the 70-200 f/4 macro as it’s much lighter and better obviously for macro, and takes 1.4x and 2.0x TC for long shots. Also prefer the 16-35 f/4 power zoom lens for lightness. So yeah our ideas are similar, but I go for the lighter options. For Astro I go the 14mm prime, and for birding, the 200-600. They are the only lenses I need for outdoor work. Got the 24-70 f2.8 for portrait and events.
no offence but your photographs are subpar
MFT here. G9ii with the Oly 8-25(16-50) f4 and the Panny 45-175(90-350). Close to your range overall. Very small, very light in comparison, mainly the telephoto, G9ii not so much. Definitely enjoying them.
SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN -I live near there
What are your views on Tamron 17-50 & 50-400
Thanks for this video. I’m gonna sell my 35mm and get the 16-35 and save up for the 100-400, BUT i think i’m gonna get the sigma 100-400 dg dn since it’s like $1,000 +- cheaper than the sony.
What are your Essential Lenses?
Hey mark can i buy my first lens as 24 70 from sony is it good for a6600
How do you make the waterfall look like that please???
Hi Mark. I’ve got a bit of a dilemma… My current line-up is: Sony G 20mm, Zeiss 55, Viltrox 85 f/1.8 (which I actually use for street) and the new 70-200 f/4. I’m wondering whether I should add a 35mm prime (the GM from Sony is such a sweet lens) or… a zoom from Tamron (28-75 g2, which is great, too) Any thoughts? I shoot mainly landscapes, street, and candid portraits.
Thank you, this video helped a lot 👍
Your shots reminds me of pics I took when I also went to Yosemite a few years ago.
Yes, this was quite helpful. Thank you.
Where do you shoot
So is this still how you shoot or has your philosophy changed in the last 3 years?
What about the gap between 35 and 100 mm?
great thank you very informative
Sounds an awful lot like an infomercial.
My essential lenses for landscape photography are:
1. 65mm on Fuji 6x9cm medium format rangefinder
2. 90mm Fuji lens on 4×5 inch large format view camera
3. 28mm on full-frame camera
4. 16-55mm Fuji on APS-C digital mirrorless
5. 14mm on micro 4/3 camera
Great video, I’m a Canon shooter and use the 17-40 for landscapes. I also have the 100-400 that I almost never use but I’ll start using it as a landscape lens and see I like it.
Too much talk, he uses 16-35 and 100-400, I saved your time watching 15 min of useless talk.
Tokina 11-16mm I or II wide angle lens:
Built like a tank, razor sharp, constant f/2.8 , standard 77mm filter, cheap! Can’t go wrong for cropped bodies for landscape
I’ve thought about picking up that 100-400, but I also am intrigued by the 200-600 to have a lineup of 12-24, 24-70, 70-200, 200-600. I use my 24-70 probably the most, and the 12-24 next (I do love ultra wide angle). The 70-200 I don’t end up using as much for landscape because like you mention it just doesn’t quite have the reach I need. It’s great for portraits though. Have you used the 200-600? It’s not a GM, but of course it’s cheaper.
Thanks for your knowledge about the wide angle lens as I have just bought a tameron 10-20mm for my Sony a77 for landscape photography and not had chance to get out and use it
Excellent ! Thank you Mark…
I have a prime 14mm f1.8 which I like a lot. I also have a 70-200mm f2.8 which I really like as well. I found recently though that my 70-300mm f4.5 actually took some better pictures than my 70-200. Use case though as normally I’d go with the 70-200 so yes situation and subject do matter as well
I never use prime lenses. I’d rather have zoom and sacrifice 10-20% of the image quality. For my photography, I carry 3 lenses, a 16-35, 24-120, and a 200-500. I am considering switching to a wider lens, but I can’t seem to find a 12-24 that accepts screw-on filters, so I may just stick with the 16-35. For landscape, 90% of my shots are on the 16-35, and the occasional one on the 24-105. The telephoto is mostly used for wildlife.
A coke bottle and a 3000 mm 😂
Do you still keep to this strategy?
Mark…. You will have to get a Drysuit ! : )
Are you shooting with a Sony camera?
I would have kept the 10-24 because from 15-24 it’s full frame and it can also be a good lens for a APS-C camera which would give you the 15mm equivalent a smaller and lighter camera with extra reach for the 100-400. Excellent video though with good suggestions. Regards Gerry.
Why is the 70-200 the same price as a reliable used car
That was Perfect for playing with the idea of photography, I recently pick-up a Canon RP, But the question was what lenses I should get. This narrowed it down very nicely for what I want to do. Thank you 👍
This does help quite a bit it will motivate me to explore the compression aspect more. I have a Canon EOS 60D and carry a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom. I will get out more and see what kind of results I can get.
New photographer here.
I just bought a Sony A7iv with a Sony 24-105 f/4
I watch 100s of reviews on gear and tutorials but decided to subscribe to this channel. Calm. Easy. Inspirational.
✌🏻
Very interesting and informative. I love the versatility of zooms.
35 mm 1.4 is good enough for me…and even the Sigma 60 mm f 2.8 on mft.
Mark, Although this is 2024, however I have been wanting to ask this question that why do we promote 24-70 focal length so much instead of the 35-150 f2-2.8 by tamron. with 2 lens theory we can still have a 16-35 f/2.8 as the wide zoom. With bodies like z8 and a7rv we can use APS-C mode and get a focal length of 225 with the tamron lens. Would you still recommend 24-70 in that case ???

Hello Mark. Having a camera with crop factor of 1,5… would you recommend me buying a 11mm fixed lens? Already have a 18-50, but i find the minimal (18 acting as a 27 crop) cropping too much for landscape hiking videography.
the 11mm seems fair price and sharp… don’t know if the weight and investment compensate the range to 10 to 18…
What do you think?
Thank you.
would you say that your 16-35 has good 3D pop?
awesome. Thank you for sharing your experience. I too have a bunch of lenses that I spent a couple grand on that I rarely use. I keep them because it’s better to have and not need than to need and not have – especially when a good lens I buy is around $1,000+ As a enthusiast a $1,000+ or even $500+ for something that is not going to generate money… well, that’s just LOVE
I do no shoot landscapes but I Loved your explanation of your lens choices. Great vid, sir. Well done. Well done. 👍
I just wanted to say thanks for all of the great photography info. I have watched a lot of photography videos by a lot of people and you are the only one I have subscribed to. I enjoy all types of outdoor photography. I love birds, other wildlife, a little macro, and wildflowers. I think landscape is my best. Maybe that’s why I enjoy your videos so much.
Thanks.
For landscape I use my 100-400mm more than any other lens, A distance second in my 24-70. Only occasionally do I need the 14-24. I haven’t touched my 70-200 since I got the 100-400.
Did you need the money?
Could you not have left a few lenses at home and just take what you thought you may have needed for that day?
Mark, I really enjoy your videos and your work. I chuckled a bit when you were talking about being steady with the 100-400, and using a 10 timer to assure a sharp photo. Us guys shooting birds in flight don’t have that luxury! Thanks for all of your work!
