11 AMAZING Macro Photo Ideas to Try At Home
In this week’s photography tutorial I share my favourite macro photo ideas that are easy to shoot at home and don’t require loads of equipment. I show my tips for splash photography, using fire in close up images, capturing amazing colours on bubbles and how doing product photos can help your macro.
All of these projects are easy to do whether you’re a beginner starting out in photography or an experienced photographer looking for some projects to keep your creativity up during the darker winter months.

I would say, food is another interesting subject to shoot.
This is one of the most inspirational photography videos I’ve seen! Thank you so much for making this and sharing it with us. I literally stopped your video and ordered a set of photographic crystals and prisims before finishing 😂 Your oil mixing setup had me thinking about shining prismatic light on the oil. Also, since I believe the light refracted by oil and bubbles is polarized, I’ll bet a circular polarizer would be very cool.
I love these ideas and have tried several of them in the past by following your tutorials and have had great results.. I would like to see water drop refraction photography which I struggle with. Also frozen flowers are easy to set up and make for some cool shots. Have you tried photographing tadpoles or frogspawn in a clear tank? BTW have you seen the latest CUPOTY results? some great ideas there to try.
Instructions not clear, my house burned down
I really liked the abstract water droplet photos, it’s mind bending to look at, but you do a great job at de-mystifying it! 👏
Thank you Andrew for another great video! You always inspire me!
A few things I’ve seen done are circuit boards, insides of a watch, a pile of coins. I haven’t done these yet but I want to do some of them over the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the reminder that there are some simple and fun ways to make some great photos.
Thankyou for another great video packed with so much information and ideas. I just have a question if someone can help me. I have just spent 2 days trying bubble photos. My problem is that I am unable to reproduce the amazing colours and patterns as in the video, I just get 3 or 4 colours in the shape of a rainbow and thats it. I have changed mixture and soap but no go. I will keep persevering and thanks again Andrew for your videos.
Thank you for posting such an informative and inspiring video. If ever there was a reason for shelling out on a soft-box, flash and flash-stand this is it! 😊
Ah, you’re back from the pub now! 🙃😂 Thanks for an inspirational video, I’m always looking for fresh ideas for indoors macro shots when it’s not so great outdoors. I’ll give a few of these a try….
Thank you for your inspirational video..
Love your ideas Andrew!
I love these ideas. I have on my list to learn how to use lighting this year and this video is my new learning tool!! 👏👏👏
Кот – телезвезда.
Thank you so much for making this very inspirational video. It gave alot of ideas to try out 😀
Different leaves will give you different results and when you’re in the florist, check the flowers
thanks for sharing such great informations btw i downloaded the video 😁
Why Battery HQ?
Great ideas, and great video! Thanks
So many great ideas here, thank you.
nice and informative video , thanks sir
Nice work, and interesting ideas 💡
Apart from the fanciful suggestion of devoting a weekend to any of your terrific projects – my last unencumbered weekend was about 40 years ago – you have once again demonstrated wonderfully well that you don’t need to leave the front gate to find beauty and inspiration. Great video Andrew!
A very well timed video. It is currently -38C in Edmonton, Alberta, and my motivation to go outside is diminishing quickly. Maybe time to give inside macro another attempt.
Some great ideas. Love the bubbles and oil and water. Still really like the one of your cat. Turned out so nice. And such a unique idea.
Andrew, i am brand new to taking photos and it’s all overwhelming. I am really struggling with my setup. Is there anyway to contact you for advice, patreon or anything, im willing to pay so to get me down the right path
Love the photo of your furry friend on 8:35 . Inspired to take some of my own.
Loved this thank you, I had watched the full video on most of them but hadnt seen the one with the bubbles or your cat…very inspirational, thank you 😁
outstanding inspiration!! thank you!
You are great, man! Thank you for all your content.
Loved the ideas. The volume on the interstitial music was pretty alarming though.
when I was a student (back in the 80’s) I used to take close-up shots of mushrooms. yes, growing indoors, at home in our student digs! the rent was cheap though 🙂
Thank you for sharing your ideas!
Greetings from Germany! 😊
After photographing the strawberry. Leave it out for a few days and it will go mouldy. The white fir can make some great macro shots
Nice video and gives me some good ideas. Currently it is -4F outside …so looking for things inside! Paint is another good option. Lots of colors and textures. You can also do water colors in a dish and swirl them with some oil for a neat effect.
