Very helpful. Thanks a lot
Urrggg Insurance !! I have to declare an Interest here. I spent 35 years of my working life in Insurance creating & agreeing policy covers with underwriters. First up would suggest the industry as whole does its self no favours with confusing terminology. I think you did a pretty good job of explaining things here Rob. Be careful with the term Personal indemnity Insurance this is generally used in connection with home owner cover and is the same as Public Liability Insurance for business. What you described is best referred to as Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance which covers professional negligence. Excellent point regarding unattended motor vehicles which most people dont appreciate but also be aware of unattended gear in general. How many snappers at games set up pitchside and then go get a cup of tea, or move round the ground getting warm up shots, leaving most of their kit in situ. If this disappears it would be classed as unattended in the open and likely not covered.
For my day job I handle personal auto insurance claims. It’s not surprising how many people don’t fully understand how to read and interpret a policy since it can legitimately be very confusing. Even if you work with it on a daily basis. This is a great basic explanation that will hopefully encourage people to get a bit more involved when purchasing coverage.
I will never forget that sinking feeling , sitting at the departure gate at Singapore’s Changi airport , when I realised I no longer had my carry on bag with me . It contained the bulk of my camera kit that I had built up over several years and had a conservative replacement value of $8000.
I ran the kilometre back to the security check-in point where I last remembered having it , only to find that no one there had seen it . I reported it missing and began the long slow , lonely walk back to the departure lounge , and what I knew would be a sympathetic and understanding wife (NOT!).
I arrived back at the gate and joined the end of the line of people now boarding the plane. Just then I felt a tap on my shoulder . I turned to see two beautiful young female employees of the airport holding my bag . Happy ending
All the time that this was going on , I consoled myself with the thought that my travel insurance would cover it , WRONG !
On checking my insurance policy , I discovered that it did not cover unattended goods outside of my residence . It did not cover lost goods , or items left in my car .
Take the time to read the fine print.
PS , My wife turned out to be even less impressed than even I expected .
Hi Rob, so I’m looking at getting some liability insurance now I’ve started doing football photography so need at least 2m cover, however I’m not a business and currently not earning anything yet for my photography, I actually work in the emergency services so where do I stand?
Rob, love your videos. Have you done any vids on shooting soccer in full midday sun? What are best settings? Just starting out and really struggling with the high contrast. Can’t find anything good online??
Thanks so much! This was really helpful
ᴏᴍɢ ғᴀɴᴛᴀsᴛɪᴄ 💋💋🔥
thanks so much! I am researching mine now after falling down the stage with my camera during shooting an event. yes, thankfully we are both ok! haha 🙂 insurance is a must then!
Thanks for always providing wonderful, informative information.
The photo bee policy says that your equipment is covered Anywhere in the UK you have a contract to work. To your knowledge, does that mean you’d have to evidence some sort of contract if you were making a claim?
Hi Rob, just a mention about renting. I recently rented a lens for a weekend from Canon and thought I’d better insure
it through the company that I’d got a policy with. Unbeknown to me, my policy didn’t cover rental gear. Never thought
about renting when I took the policy out, so I had to take an extra policy out just for a weekend.
Also Rob, does your policy cover mechanical breakdown to your camera gear. I haven’t seen many companies that cover this.
Thanks again for the video.
Hi Rob, thanks for the video, a really good and very important video, thanks for the very in depth information., Pete 👍
Thank you Rob 🙂 I needed this concept demystified and now I have a lot more confidence while I search for insurance policies.
Have been with PolicyBee for a good number of years, can’t fault them.
My PolicyBee cover costs £55 pm and has an excess of £500.
Household insurance does not cover the vast majority of what most people do these days within the scope of photography, especially as we all have to meet our obligations under certain rules, regulations and laws such as data protection, litigation, etc.
In today’s world it is far better to be safe than to have regret and then worry.
Any suggestions for American coverage?
I really need help cause I’m panicking. I’m only 20 and spent my entire life savings in a Sony A7S iii and bought drop/fall protection insurance through Extend and they’re not going to cover my camera because I was filming a concert and someone punched my camera. They won’t cover that for some reason even though I bought premium fall/drop protection. I’m freaking out because I’m now $4000 less and everything is hopeless now. What do I do now?
I’m glad to have „lings“ in Switzerland to insure my equipment. You only pay when you need it and that when I take the stuff outside my house. They insure for the latest original price. Since I buy my stuff always secondhand or on sale, I will actually make money when something breaks. Just imagine getting the full price of the 1DX if it breaks, gets soaked or stolen. By the way: the 1DX costs about 1.5€ per day.
Perfectly timed Rob. I am looking into insurance at the moment. I’m not a pro and don’t earn my living from shooting sports and so i don’t want to spend a fortune on insurance. That said i obviously want to protect my gear, i guess it’s working our what compromises/cover i can live with/without.
Rob, thanks for this and have gone with PolicyBee, a great deal, and on the ball.
Great video Rob. Thank you.
It seems there is a lack of options for us non professional photographers. People that do not make money with photography but end up with expensive gear and in the same places and situations as the professional folk. Every photography specific insurance company that I have looked into here in the US expects you to be a business
Thanks for the video Rob. Got me thinking about my unpaid work for a club where I have no gear insurance nor public liability……. Might need to rethink that for next season
