A Complete Guide to LONG EXPOSURE Photography | Seascapes and Shutter Speeds

In this video I go over my process for photographing long exposure seascapes. I talk about what shutter speeds I like the best, how to calculate those shutter speeds for really long exposure, and the decisions I make with this style of photography. This video is great for both beginners and more advanced photographers.

I found the square glass nd-filters are very fragile

Nice breakdown. Yup, let’s keep the math to a minimum. 🤪

Have you tried 200mm with 15 stop nd filter, for this kind of photography? Sadly I don’t have 10 stop for my wide angle lens, yet.

Great shots. Thanks for explaining why you made each exposure decision!

Hello from the UK. Very informative video and lovely images. May I ask whether for the shorter exposure shots taken without ND filter, did you use any other filters, such as a UV or polariser?
    Thanks.

  14. @Fessoid on October 29, 2024 at 9:33 pm

6:00 Калькулятор ND-фильтров должен быть в современных камерах, а не мобильных приложениях 😉

Very good Mike. For someone that lives in Arizona, you shoot seascapes very well.

I just got the ML-L7 for my Z7II as the firmware update 1.40 included the addition. It’s fabulous and has 2 Fnc buttons, I have one for the ‘i’ and one for ‘menu’. The controller has a multi-function controller to move settings.

I’m also a huge fan of long exposure shots! However, I keep over exposing the shots!!! It drives me nuts 🥜👎 Thank you 🙏

I’d add a good pair of wellies to the essential equipment for beach shots here in the UK plus long spikes for the tripod (not just the short ones)

    Thank you for the tips

  23. @markgilder9990 on October 29, 2024 at 9:46 pm

I find PhotoPills invaluable now for planning and exposure calculations with ND filters. No release required. Use self time with mirror lock up or electronic shutter. The blended shots are awesome.

  24. @wjgraham63 on October 29, 2024 at 9:47 pm

Where would you put your focus point in the scene? And what metering are you using? Partial? Spot? Is f11 the perfect aperture? Thanks.

  25. @kevywilliams3304 on October 29, 2024 at 9:48 pm

    500 $ for 82 mm filters !????? Seriously !!!!! We don’t all have 82 mm lenses 😂

  26. @daveh8679 on October 29, 2024 at 9:51 pm

Excellent. Great tips well explained 👍

  27. @seangaffney581 on October 29, 2024 at 9:51 pm

To me that scene needs a prop and get lower. I live on beach and shoot daily long and short exposure. Coconuts rocks, shells or sticks throw something in front brake up the hoo hum.

  28. @bobcoggin4618 on October 29, 2024 at 9:53 pm

    Brill 👍🏻

  29. @DavidSenteno on October 29, 2024 at 9:54 pm

Rogue wave soaked my whole bag. The water was bad enough but it also washed in sand onto everything. Rookie lesson learned. Thanks for the info. 🥂

Mike and Chris, thanks very much for entertaining and informative videos. I enjoy them immensely. A completely sideways question – what kind of boots are you wearing early in this video? They look interesting.

Excellent introduction to long exposure and to the endless possible settings and effects it offers. Thank you

Is it possible to take photos without ND filters can’t invest much !

What’s the name of the mobile app you’re using dude?

  38. @bamsemh1 on October 29, 2024 at 10:03 pm

Magicseaweed sadly isn’t available for Android 😕 do you have any alternatives?

  39. @creativetom413 on October 29, 2024 at 10:03 pm

I’m beginning in long exposure. I have a 1000 nd, and I try with single shot or 3 bracketed -2 -0 – +2 exposure shots

is also a polarized filter necessary to get a nice color of the water?
