Four things. The distance your subject is from the background.

There is a fourth: the size of the sensor or film format. The smaller the sensor, the greater the depth of field

How does the camera know what to focus on?

  9. @nealshields6373 on October 29, 2024 at 9:12 pm

“In focus” nothing that isn’t on the focal plane (which is infinitely thin) is in focus.

DOF refers to the area that will “appear” to be in focus at a given reproduction ratio at a given viewing distance. This is particularly important with digital photography where you don’t have to have a dark room to crop a photograph. Something that the photographer’s vision required to be sharp is suddenly out of focus because the photograph was cropped. I have a Linhof camera that has multiple DOF tables for different enlargement sizes.

I’ve been watching some photography videos to understand the eye and vision. Obviously, not perfect analogies but I find it is still quite helpful

  14. @wanneske1969 on October 29, 2024 at 9:16 pm

Very interesting ! Most people think only the f-number affects dof, but it doesn’t ! And it’s not the biggest effect

Focal length = zoom or lens fitted. Apologies if I am incorrect

  17. @marianodemiguel3442 on October 29, 2024 at 9:17 pm

Great video. Question: If you use a 28-300 zoom set at 28 compared to a prime lens 28: is the prime lens sharper?

  23. @333raffles on October 29, 2024 at 9:27 pm

You say distance to subject and some say focusing distance. These are different things. I’m confused.

  24. @badvlad63 on October 29, 2024 at 9:27 pm

Short, to the point, and detailed all at the same time. Great Stuff. BTW kudos for the shot of Boston Red Sox 🏆🙃

  28. @marcorossi2182 on October 29, 2024 at 9:32 pm

Thank you for this. I would have liked some extra words spent on difference while keeping the same framing and using different focal length and subject distance.

  29. @canopychondros on October 29, 2024 at 9:33 pm

hi im a miniature painter and im going to start making youtube videos soon, ive tested all of my len’s i have aout 10 and im using a nikon d7200, i found one lens the best with about a 10cm dof but its not the sharpest image, its an old Miranda 70-210mm 1:45-5.6 MACRO 62m lens, the shooting distance is about 1.4-1.6 meters.

i have a loawa 60mm macro which is amazing but the focal distance is like 8-12cm from lens to subject with needing to paint and making bases ect i dont want the camera right infront of me above or to one side is fine.

im on a budget and ideally would like something nicer. im thinking i need to stay with a telephoto lens so i can shoot around 1-3 meters away and maintain the highest dof possible. any lens or technique suggestions would help.

im currently loking at a sigma 70-300mm apo dg lens but its only a 58mm wide lens and im wondering you or anyone of your subs in the chat section have any ideas on len’s to try ect.

Awesome 🎉 ive been suffering from brokeh. Its when a videographer trys to capture the entire sports event using a 1.7 f stop for a paid gig solo. Thank You

    thank you

  32. @borey123xx9 on October 29, 2024 at 9:41 pm

Im confused, if youre doing landscape, cant you just use a fast f stop like f/4 and simply focus off in the distance? How is that different than using f/16 and also focusing in the distance?

  33. @JaydenLawson on October 29, 2024 at 9:43 pm

  45. @Lee-haw on October 29, 2024 at 9:54 pm

    Thanks for the video.
So, if i have a variable zoom lens, is it better to keep the subject close to the camera with 50mm zoom, Or zoom in farther about 200mm and move the subject away to the same size?

  46. @MichaelMartinRusch on October 29, 2024 at 9:54 pm

learning about this without kellan would be reckless.
