EASY Indoor Lighting Setup for Groups (REAL Behind The Scenes)

EASY Indoor Lighting Setup for Groups (REAL Behind The Scenes)

This is a huge question I get asked constantly; how to light indoor photos for groups of people. Well here it is in the truth behind the scenes fashion on a REAL wedding when it started raining and we had to take family photos and some bridal party with this lighting setup for group photos indoors. This is a good lighting setup for wedding photography but I just used the exact same thing with a group of doctors just this afternoon.

Here’s a video on EASY Indoor Lighting Setup for Groups. A REAL Behind The Scenes wedding photography.

Hope you enJoy!

Thanks to https://www.instagram.com/marktomphotography/ for taking the behind the scenes video and putting the video together!

This is a very good video with lots of valuable information. In my opinion it was kind of jarring to be constantly going from horizontal to vertical orientation all the time. I know it is trendy to use vertical mode, but if part of the video is shot in one mode, I recommend all the video be shot that way.

    what was the strobe settings?

  5. @katasticone on October 29, 2024 at 9:07 pm

    1) Great video and replies. I had been wondering about highlight tone priority and using the back panel on the shoot through. I love the idea of the umbrella for portability on a wedding day. This helped cement that as my modifier for the wedding I’m shooting in a few weeks. 2) You are a freaking saint for dealing with the amount of mansplaining in these comments. My jaw is on the floor with the audacity of some of these dudes.

Hey Vanessa…came here looking for guidance on flash photography and really liked your videos…can you help me choose between canon ttl speedlite vs a manual third party speedlite on canon 750d…I will use it indoors for casual photography and very occasionally outdoors…can el 100 handle my needs or do I need a more powerful flash

  8. @carlosazevedo7748 on October 29, 2024 at 9:14 pm

Vanessa, why are you using a diffusor on the back of the umbrella?

  9. @sandeemilhouse555 on October 29, 2024 at 9:17 pm

My large umbrella doesn’t have a diffuser to put on the back, how much does that matter?

  10. @darrellcadieux3497 on October 29, 2024 at 9:18 pm

@VanessaJoy Hi Vanessa. Question please: On your R5 using Highlight Tone Priority are you using the D+ setting or the D+2 setting…and why? Thank you.

  11. @gregshawphotography8828 on October 29, 2024 at 9:19 pm

Hey Vanessa, I like that you used a large shoot thru umbrella. I would never thought to use that. I’ve always used two shallow shoot thru umbrellas. I should get the same results with my B2. What was your max power level?

  12. @bluestarcesium on October 29, 2024 at 9:20 pm

Usually, you put the pancake behind the Bride and the Bride is turned thirty degrees to slim down her posterior. If a Bride posterior is closer to the lenses, it will enlarge the posterior in relation to the rest of the body and the pancake in front of it will make the posterior look huge.

  13. @1645308 on October 29, 2024 at 9:22 pm

How large of a group would you feel comfortable shooting with this size umbrella?

  14. @Abhigrapher on October 29, 2024 at 9:23 pm

what a flat boring lighting .

  15. @adelaide_locals on October 29, 2024 at 9:24 pm

I actually like this. Yes people say it’s a flat light source but the area the wedding party was in, is very light and having this type of light source makes everything look clean, white and crisp.

  16. @feartheferg2483 on October 29, 2024 at 9:24 pm

Beautiful shots and great lighting. Do you recommend a setup for a lower price point?

$2k is a bit steep for a hobbyist

Your brides flowers are to high .the flowers are coverings her bust line .

  27. @AlexanderBischof on October 29, 2024 at 9:48 pm

Vanessa, great work and this video shows again why flash is sooooo good and important. Do you work most of the time on your own or with an assistant at weddings?

  28. @jkahn923 on October 29, 2024 at 9:49 pm

Did you use any gels? Or are you okay shooting daylight flash mixed with hall tungsten?

  29. @jbmomentsphotography8434 on October 29, 2024 at 9:49 pm

Hi – what was the setting you mentioned for protecting the highlights on the Canon?

Thanks for the video and the free guide. Going to miss your collab with Seth and Daniel when you move to Austin. Best of luck there.

Hi Vanessa I’m trying to locate your free family photo guide.

Great tutorial I agree with the large umbrella far enough away produced no shadows.

you marketing is efficient you just moved to Texas and you booking work good for all good video

  33. @jeffrey3205 on October 29, 2024 at 9:52 pm

    Hey Vanessa, 2 questions.
If you’re shooting a couple that are not on the same plane of view what F-Stop do you use?
If the bridal party is staggered then what F-Stop do you use?
    btw, waiting on that R3 video… just staying… πŸ™‚

  34. @TylerCordaro on October 29, 2024 at 9:54 pm

IMO this light is really flat.

  35. @ASP-HTX on October 29, 2024 at 9:54 pm

Thank you for putting the time to do this, however I have to say, with all due respect, I would never do this at an actual wedding!!

You can achieve better results by simply bouncing your flash off of the ceiling & wall instead of having to deal with a massive 5ft umbrella. By doing so, you can achieve a bigger light source if you wish to, much faster setup time, less reflection in the mirror behind your subjects, keep some of those valuable shadows, and match the ambient color since the bouncing surfaces are mixed with gold.

You mentioned to someone else in the comments that flat lighting is your style. Sure, that can your style, but you have to set yourself apart from the newbies that set their light sources at eye level.
By setting up this massive umbrella in this low ceiling room, you are not in full control of the lighting position vertically. That’s another advantage of bouncing in this scenario.

This is just my two cents.

  36. @majid360a on October 29, 2024 at 9:57 pm

so flat more like on camera flash , you could get much better result with bouncing 2 speedlights

  37. @jeffdeal1162 on October 29, 2024 at 9:59 pm

$379 for an umbrella, I seriously hope you guys don’t do this. I’ve killed my fair share of 86 inch "parabolic" (not) umbrellas and sailed away on quite a few 60 inchers. Umbrella’s are limited time use items and should cost as such.
