Fine Art Street Photography PERFECT FIRST LESSON

Fine Art Street Photography PERFECT FIRST LESSON

In this video, I learn to photograph Fine Art Street Photography.

Last week, I teamed up with Gareth Danks a Fine Art Street Photographer and headed to London. My objective was to learn how to create Street Photography images in a Fine Art Style!

I have a deep passion for Street Photography. I also love creating Fine Art Landscape Images. Because I love both, I thought it was about time I tried to combine both passions so that’s where Gareth comes in.

Gareth is a Photographer by profession and he’s a highly admired Fine Art Street Photographer too! So, if ever I was going to learn a new style then there’s no better teacher out there!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gareth for his time and patience… especially the latter 🙂

If you want to see what I consider the best of such a style then go look at images by Fan Ho.

Rule 1. Make sure your human subject is at least 50 yards away.
    2. Preferably with their back turned.
    3. Underexpose by 4 stops.
    4. Overcast or rainy conditions.
    5. Jack up the contrast in post so there are no details in the shadows and highlights.
    6. When asked why you created such an ugly and depressing image, tell them that it is your aesthetic preference.

my favorite photographer is Daido Moriyama and my photography is quite spontaneous like his aswell. So this doesnt really speak to me, but interesting nonetheless

Very interesting video. Loved the patience he showed while waiting for the composition he wanted. Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it, but what lens was Gareth using?

All you need to do to get great street images – you need to buy a Fuji camera. 95% job is done lol. Kidding. Great video guys!

  19. @blisteringbooks2428 on October 29, 2024 at 9:29 pm

I do not understand the concept of Fine Art, there is photography, and images that tell a story, I would not know the difference between classic and fine art, to me it is if the photographer has an eye for the image or not.

  20. @robinbhairam7508 on October 29, 2024 at 9:30 pm

Interesting video … great lesson to learn the components and concepts, but these are hugely over shot locations. In fact if you go to them in the summer, you will trip over a ‘zillion’ workshops working the same scenes. Garth is of course well experienced photographer and his work is excellent … would love to see a ‘fine art’ lesson in flat dull light – nice video tnx … 😊 📷

Minimalist, negative space, silhouette "street photographers", name a more basic Instagram photographer 😂😂

What a great video. Learnt a lot today and want to go out taking pictures in my small hometown. Learn how to see and find locations and "Work the scene". Thanks a lot.

I usually shoot with b/w film, which makes each frame more precious. It makes me work that bit harder, with a slow considered approach. It’s not for everyone, but I get a great deal of satisfaction when everything comes together in the darkroom.

  27. @mikeyb6737 on October 29, 2024 at 9:38 pm

Great video. I loved this. About to buy a new camera.

  28. @mauriciolee7349 on October 29, 2024 at 9:39 pm

Your video clearly demonstrates how to take fine art photos in details. Thank you

  29. @mattwasMTB on October 29, 2024 at 9:40 pm

How does a guy like Gareth make money? People buy prints of shots like this?

  30. @theintroverttraveler1849 on October 29, 2024 at 9:41 pm

Great video, one of my favourite ever on street photography. Learning to see is key

  31. @judabrisfam7604 on October 29, 2024 at 9:42 pm

I am so glad this video popped up in my feed. I enjoyed this and learned. I loved it when you handed over the video camera so we could see exactly what he was seeing. That perspective was amazing. I loved how you lit up when you captured that shot you were working for. That is the beauty of art, we can always learn and grow. I found myself feeling burnt out with work lately even after changing things up in my work so I took the advice that has worked before. Pop on a lens I hadn’t used in awhile, in my case it was a macro and get outside and try something new. I enjoyed pushing myself to use it in non-traditional way even and took advantage of what a macro lens was created to do. It felt like it did when I first began learning photography.

  32. @bryangideon5822 on October 29, 2024 at 9:42 pm

Great video both of you are inspiring and I’ve learnt a lot thanks

  33. @leeds-yoga9265 on October 29, 2024 at 9:42 pm

The use of the term "fine art" in street photography is merely a marketing tool signifying nothing.

  34. @IsraelistheJewsland on October 29, 2024 at 9:43 pm

5:37 when he said tye tree kind of ruins it i nearly spat my drink.

  35. @NigeS4 on October 29, 2024 at 9:47 pm

A bit late to the show, but I really enjoyed this, and this is something I’d very much like to try. Gary what lens were you using please?

  36. @MrGarrych on October 29, 2024 at 9:49 pm

Why do you call it “fine art” what makes it fine as opposed to just art?

  37. @CarnivalVillage on October 29, 2024 at 9:50 pm

    Awesome. Thank you, sir.

  38. @worldadventuretravel on October 29, 2024 at 9:50 pm

I’ve been waiting for someone to tell me that good street photography is, in fact, fine art and people will buy those images. I was getting worried that to make any money at this I’d have to go shoot weddings and just do my real art as a permanent hobby. Thanks!

  39. @DeniseJ on October 29, 2024 at 9:51 pm

Fantastic video! I loved the way this was presented and I learned a few things…Thank you!

  40. @justmythought7658 on October 29, 2024 at 9:51 pm

What if the person you are adding without knowing it doesn’t want to be part of your picture?

  41. @darinwatkins747 on October 29, 2024 at 9:52 pm

Interesting, using X100V what did you use for film simulations? Also was his pictures SOOC or post edited?

The heck is “fine art street photography”? Lol

  46. @karenlodwidge2676 on October 29, 2024 at 10:03 pm

What an inspiration, can’t wait to explore this 😍 thank you so much!

  47. @Superbustr on October 29, 2024 at 10:03 pm

To me the essence of photography and specifically a fine art photograph is to live in the moment that a photo has been taken in. Handheld street photography is too fast and too random for one to live that moment before the decision is taken to take a photo; no matter what the framing or lighting is. It’s a guessing games less about the photographer’s intent and more about getting lucky. Perhaps I don’t get it. Perhaps I am too used to using a tripod that slows one down quite drastically and forces you to be more deliberate and precise. That said the photos from this video are good and do catch some unique moments.
