Camera Stabilizers Epic, All Kinds of Ways to Steady Your Camera

Camera Stabilizers Epic, All Kinds of Ways to Steady Your Camera

IBIS camera stabilization can only do so much without warping the background. The best stabilization is when the camera is physically held in 3D space mechanically. Get it right the first time so you don’t spend hours trying to fix something with software on your computer. Here are the items featured in the video. Would you like to tell me which stablizers are probably suitable for Camcorders such as Panasonic X2?

Nice video. I use little camcorders. Sony Cx405 and such. And I use the canon t3I. That is all I have. For now a tripod works for me. Some times I just do hand held shots when I can, keeping the camera as steady as possible. But I know what to get now if I need it. Thanks, Markus.

In a pinch, a camera fixed to a 2X4 eight feet long will smooth out the shakes.

I think Kasey from Camera Conspiracies would REALLY enjoy receiving Ronin SC by DJI Pro for a logging, as he would absolutely enjoy the extra weight during his outdoor of logs, as well as the exercise benefit SCDs necessary to hold up is motionless his camera on long ranting walks! I can only imagine the resulting 15-20 minute video complaining of the pain required to carry this with him on his nature hikes!

Back in 1960, or thereabouts, I taught a class in photography on the side to soldiers in Korea. Given that there were great bargains available on Japanese cameras, it seemed everyone had put their money down but weren’t geeting expected results. I made everyone buy a Diana. It was a plastic camera with a plastic lens. I told them that everyone of them had purchased a camera that was smarter than they were. I wanted the to begin with the basics and all use the same camera. That first class I had told them to take a few pictures around the base in with their Dianas and return in one hour and we would devlop them when they returned. I selected some that illustrated a point. I asked them what the most important piece of their equipment was. All replied either camera or lens or film. Wrong. I taught them that it was a tripod. That little Diana with a tripod could possibly get better results than their Canon or Nikon with the most expensive lens if the camera moved. If they didn’t happen to have a tripod handy, lean against a wall, a telephone pole, anything. Also, I mentioned that, absent a tripod, pull their elbows in to their body, unless they needed their arms for flying.

  25. @garrrbarr on October 29, 2024 at 9:41 pm

for the flycam, how do you manual focus? Do you need a wireless follow focus, used in your offhand or something? And do you end up needing a monitor to see what it’s shooting? And when you twist it to aim left or right, do you jolt the camera?

I always enjoy your comparison videos. You can compare the very best tech with cheap or outdated tech without being overly judgmental or snobby, because sometimes "it is what is is" and the cheap stuff is useful to some people.

  33. @MoonWalkCTO on October 29, 2024 at 9:52 pm

I never got the gimbal thing – yes it makes movements smoother but shake is still going to translate through as he shows at 15:20 – as I understand it IBIS deals with shake better

  34. @marctrainor5595 on October 29, 2024 at 9:53 pm

Thanks for a very informing and honest video. You’re right. It still takes a lot of practice to make it look smooth. Marc T.

  35. @ksnax on October 29, 2024 at 9:53 pm

Inertial mass is the key for all of the passive systems. The further away from frame center the mass is, the more inertia they have for a specific weight. Back in the 90s, I built a triple weight flybar mount for my Hi-8 camera. And while the IS on the Sony camera was revolutionary and worked fantastic on it’s own, the flybar weights completely changed the game for less than $30 (could have gotten it done for under $5, but I made it nicer than that). I bought a DJI gimble for my phone a few years ago, and the only thing it really does better than the flybars is lateral roll stabilization, but adjusting the weights and locations on the flybars would alter that as well. One doesn’t need the $$$ gear if they have good technique and a little bit of ingenuity.

    New video episode idea:
Is there any good system to turn a mirrorless/dSLR into a PTZ controled from OBS software on PC (cheaper than 1" PTZ)?
For scenes, tracking, option for powered zooms (eg. Sony).

  48. @Wildridefilms on October 29, 2024 at 10:08 pm

Hi Markus, I slightly disagree with your point of how IBIS or Lens IS cannot naturally stabilize in 3D space.
Sure, the range of motion is smaller with these in camera stabilization methods when compared to a gimbal or a steadycam, but they effectively do the same thing.
And about warping with wide angle lenses, yes, that is a real issue with IBIS, as the rotatory compensations which involve the sensor coming out of its plane, make the image warp. So if you’re shooting wider than 24mm, adding a 3 axis gimbal would be very useful.
And also, those 3 axis gimbals cannot compensate for the translatory jerks on their own and you are reliant on the inertia of the system to keep it steady.

  49. @AndrewRix on October 29, 2024 at 10:09 pm

The Steadycam arm does take out a lot of the up and down movement caused by walking or running.
    Another great video!
